I was thinking, do we want a proper registration system for future WiLANgas?
Like, something on the website where you can enter your name, optional alias, which end of the network you'd prefer to be on, and maybe even Paypal over the $10 in advance to reserve a place? And then at the event there's a local version which reads the data from the website and can add people who haven't reserved spots.
Not to bag on the current spreadsheet-based system, but I think we should try to get as much of the admin stuff automated as we can, so that when we eventually get sick of running things we can just pass on the system to whoever comes next, and in the meantime we can focus on the fun stuff.
i really like this idea, just have to work out how to manage the pre-reg seating system. We could also link the pre-reg with musicbox etc identities, perhaps have these linked to the machinespirit servers?
Yeah I was thinking the pre-registration would show the 10-digit logon code to the user, (we'd keep a copy in case they forgot it.) Also, if they use the same computer we can set a cookie for wilanga.net with the code, and then when they show up at the actual lan their computer might still have the cookie and they won't even need to type it in.
Simon's working on figuring out the big-picture stuff, I'm sure he'll post what he comes up with here and you can suggest things, and then I'll code it up.
As I said to Ashton quickly tonight a pre-registration system is wicked, the way I saw it in my mind is we have a map of the basic layout of the lan (this never changes :P) and have numbered seats, sell these seats on paypal so that way people can book seats with their friends etc.
