Lets be perfectly honest here, the forums need to be changed to phpbb3. People's posts are all over the place, replying to people posts is annoying, and the forums just look plain messy and confusing.

Seconded

Seconded. This was my sentiment from the start to have it as a proper forum that people will be familiar with, people wont want to have to learn something new to participate in this community, this kind of shift we can do now before the forums get too large to change.

improve current system?

Is there any way I can improve the current system without scrapping the entire thing? I like drupal's CMS features and it's modular structure (which has made setup and customization a breeze). I've been able to add openid support, the gigya social network login and sharethis modules with little to no problems. If I can work out a way to get something like the profile system I built for the homebrew CMS I was working on working in Drupal I'd be on cloud nine.

The way comments/replies are shown can be changed at the bottom of each thread, are you aware of this?

Drupal is a CMS not just forum software, and the forums DO suffer a little bit of underdevelopment because of this, but I like the system as a whole for actually managing everything cohesively.

Two things

The two things I'd like to see are a "Post" button without previewing your post, and a "New posts" thing on the forum groups so you can see if anyone has posted anything new from the forums page (at the moment it only shows new threads)

half done

I actually set it to "require preview" as a way of making people check what they post, but I've changed that now. The main forum page shows who the last comment was by, but the things just don't light up, which I'm trying to fix now.

You can run phpBB within Drupal I do believe.

It doesn't help that the main site for phpbb in drupal is down.

Re: change over to phpbb3

I tried, damnit! We can have phpBB separate to Drupal, or I can probably custom-build some wrapper between the two, but if you guys want phpBBdrupal or whatever the hell it's called, someone else is going to need to do it.

Apparently I'm interface-impaired-- I can program all sorts of things, but installing phpBB over Drupal and using Drupal's GUI is a nightmare.

The installation instructions site is still down for me. If you were trying to do it without the guide I'm not surprised you couldn't get it going.

No, there's a different module (don't remember what it was called) that I used. It included instructions in a README, but I couldn't follow them.

If you get me the link I can have another go, but only because you guys want it. I don't mind the default forums

I can't find a link to the one I used, but there are instructions here: http://community.contractwebdevelopment.com/integrating-phpbb-with-drupal which seem fairly easy to follow.
